Later start dates in Academic year 2019-2020 are also possible, such as Jan 1, 2020. Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in statistics, probability, mathematics, or a related field, by the start of the appointment, or show evidence that they will receive their degree within six months of that start date.Candidates must have demonstrated excellence in research in statistics and/or closely related fields, and a proven record of self-motivated research. A strong interest in theoretical analysis will be appreciated for most positions. Good written and oral communication skills are required. Experience in teaching undergraduate service, major, or graduate courses in statistics and probability will be an asset, for those candidates who wish to negotiate some teaching as part of their job duties.The broad areas of research encompass probability theory, stochastic analysis, mathematical statistics, statistical inference for complex data, applied Bayesian computation, and the mathematics of insurance and financial risk.Successful candidates will work with specific research teams within STT, on research projects of interest to the team leaders. They will also be given opportunities, and will be expected, to pursue their own research agendas. Collaborations by successful candidates across these research teams will also be possible and encouraged. Since each position is funded by team leaders, not STT directly, it is expected that a majority of each postdoctoral associates research time will be spent on the teams agenda. The team leaders, and associated research topics, are identified below in this job posting. Interested candidates may contact these leaders directly with questions about these projects. The expected duration of each postdoctoral position is identified below as well.
    • Research topics: probability and statistical inferential theory for analyzing complex data such as tensor and networks. Specific topics include, but are not restricted to, random matrix theory for network models, high-dimensional probability related to tensor structures, and sampling theory under dependency.
    • Duration: 2 years, plus an additional year upon mutual agreement.
    • Non-research duties: one to two STT courses per academic year, to be negotiated.
    • Research topics: Statistical Learning for spatio-temporal processes including statistical and mathematical properties of classification and prediction in multivariate and high dimensional settings. Extension to various data types arising in complex applications such as imaging and autonomous car driving. Novelty detection for multivariate extremes with applications to climate science and network anomalies.
    • Duration: 2 years, plus an additional year upon mutual agreement.
    • Non-research duties: up to one STT course per academic year, to be negotiated.
    • Research topics: stochastic analysis on Wiener space, statistical inference for stochastic processes, mathematical statistics, applications to climate data and casualty insurance risk, computational Bayesian analysis applied to various topics including African studies, agricultural economics, agronomy, development economics, healthcare analytics, hydrology, nuclear physics.
    • Duration: 1 year, plus an additional year upon mutual agreement.
