SUMMARYMichigan State University is seeking a seasoned,
independent-working, motivated advancement professional to plan,
implement, and continually enhance a comprehensive university
advancement parent and family program. The purpose of this program
is to grow the number of parents and families giving to MSU and
increase the depth of that giving. This focuses on engaging Spartan
parents and families with the university and with each other; to
strengthen the MSU relationship with parents and families; and to
encourage their philanthropic support. -CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIESThe duties of the Associate Director of the Parent
and Family Program are as follows but not limited to:Portfolio
Management / Fundraising:
- Manage a portfolio of 100 parent and family prospects, with a
particular focus on non-alumni parents.
- Research selected parents and families to identify, develop
strategy for, and cultivate potential planned and major gifts.
- Coordinate with constituency-based development officers,
regional major gift officers, and gift planning advisors in the
discovery, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift
parent prospects likely to support specific university programs and
activities.
- Develop proposals and gift agreements and coordinate with
University Development staff to major gift parent and family
prospects.
- Maintain records and resource materials to assist in the
cultivation of major gift parent and family prospects interested in
support of university programs and activities.
- Plan and host campus visits for major gift prospects with
faculty and university leadership as part of the strategic
cultivation plan when required.Program Management and
Collaboration:
- Work with Data Analytics and other university departments to
acquire accurate and timely data from SIS in order to broadly
research, personally engage, and appropriately code prospects in
Advance/Ascend.
- Educate University Advancement colleagues on program purpose,
goals, and opportunities for collaboration.
- Maintain, identify, engage, and steward the Parent and Family
Ambassador Council members and their philanthropic support.
- Partner and participate in the annual MSU Parent and Family
Weekend on campus in ways that will increase audience awareness for
philanthropic support.
- Execute engagement events (virtually and in-person) in our
major metro regions identifying potential parent and family
prospects.
- Create communication strategy for providing information and to
further build the parent network. -
- Develop promotional materials, transmittal letters, and other
supportive material required for discovery, cultivation,
solicitation, and stewardship of Parent and Family audiences.
- Serve as a vital member of the Special Constituencies team to
support the Senior Director of Individual Giving.SUPERVISION
RECEIVED
- Direction received from the Senior Director of Individual
GivingUnit Specific Education/Experience/SkillsKnowledge equivalent
to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year
college degree program in Communications, Public Relations,
Marketing and/or Business; three to five years of related and
progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in
public relations, volunteer administration, professional, and
higher education fund raising, marketing, or related field; or an
equivalent combination of education and experience.Desired

- A Bachelor's degree, master's degree preferred.
- Excellent writing and verbal communication skills. -
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite of tools.
- Fundraising experience or experience in donor related work at
an institution of higher learning.
- Ability to speak in public and small group environment.
- Collaborative and team-oriented working style and excellent
interpersonal skills.
- Strong work ethic.
- Experience with "Moves Management" or related strategic
relationship development techniques and practices. Understanding of
database/audience segmentation and donor continuum.
- Creativity, curiosity, sense of humor, high energy level, and
enthusiasm for meeting and working with a wide range of
individuals.
- Understanding the importance of building life-long
relationships between the university and its alumni and
friends.
- Experience working with diverse individuals.
- Professional appearance and demeanor.
- Self-starter, with demonstrated ability to take initiative.

- Good decision-making skills, tactful, strong listening skills,
willingness to search out answers, ability to recognize when others
need to be involved in activities or decisions.
- Proven skills and ability in managing multi-phase projects from
inception to completion, including building consensus among team
members and balancing multiple concurrent priorities.
- Limited travel involving automobile, airlines and rail; must
