Position Summary
This position will assist in the care and maintenance of designated
campus golf course grounds areas (Forest Akers Golf Courses);
Grade, seed, pack, water, and sod golf course area; Mow grass to
include greens, tees, fairways, and roughs; Apply sprays to include
fertilizer, herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides to appropriate
golf course grounds areas; Change cups, rake sane bunkers, aerate
turf areas, prune trees, and care of flowers; Operate trucks,
tractors, and related equipment for maintenance of golf course
areas; Assist in the cleaning of golf course areas after
tournaments; Assist with repair and maintenance of irrigation
systems; Care of golf course for weekends, holidays, and
tournaments; Clean and care for grounds keeping tools, equipment,
materials, buildings, and supplies; May include participation in
Campus Snow Removal Plan; Provide customer service to MSU Community
and the public; Respond or inform supervisory staff of complaints,
comments and/or unmet service needs.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
One year of satisfactory experience as a golf course laborer,
sports turf industry laborer, turf management, or an equivalent
combination of golf course/turf management education and
experience; Working knowledge of tools, methods, equipment and
materials used in golf course maintenance; Possession of a valid
Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator's certification - Turf
(3A), Ornamental (3B) and Right of Way (6); Possession of a valid
Loader and Toolcat Operator Permit upon completion of probation or
trial period; Possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator's
license; Must meet MSU safe driving standards and drive a
University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification;
Must be able to work in variable or severe weather conditions;
During golf season (April 1 to November 1) significant after-hours,
weekend and holiday work is required; Frequent lifting of 26 to 50
pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds is required; May
require one year of professional paid snow removal experience. This
position will progress to a Greenskeeper II after the following has
been achieved: two years' experience as a Greenskeeper I,
satisfactory performance and successful demonstration of operating
equipment or an equivalent combination of technical training and
experience.
Desired Qualifications
A two-year degree in turf management; Experience in fertilization
and boom spraying application.
A creative and innovative lifelong learner with the ability to
communicate effectively with a diverse population; able to problem
solve within a collaborative team environment; ability to
understand different perspectives while utilizing expert knowledge
of the technical operations of the job.

Special Instructions

Certificate. Must be certified in the following categories: Turf
(3A), Ornamental (3B), and Right of Way (6).
Work Hours
M-F from 6am-2:30pm with significant after-hours, weekend, &
holiday work. Shifts may vary depending on seasonality of work
requirements or emergency situations e.g. snow removal, parking
ramp maintenance, football cleanup, or other events.

Duties associated with this position involve working in noisy
(above 85 decibels) areas, ability to work in variable and severe
