The Associate Provost is responsible for envisioning, leading, and implementing educator development and learning outcomes metrics through the Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation (CTLI). The CTLI, established in 2021, advances the academic mission of Michigan State University by promoting a culture of inclusive excellence in teaching and learning. The CTLI brings together outstanding faculty, academic staff, and graduate students involved in educational studies to enhance teaching and learning methodology, technology, and innovation at MSU.MSU is committed to improving student learning outcomes through the continuous improvement of teaching provided by educators of all appointment types. Educator development at MSU occurs in a complex, decentralized context in which university-level offices and academic units aim to provide aligned and complementary support for teaching and learning. At the center of this complex web of teaching and learning supports is the CTLI, which provides direct programmatic support to individuals and actively collaborates with unit-level teaching and learning support teams to foster a university culture that values the educational mission at its core. The Associate Provost leads the Center staff and collaborates with the Office of the Provost, College Deans, and other University partners to ensure a balanced and coordinated relationship between educator development experiences situated in colleges and departments and those provided centrally.The Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation must fulfill several specific functions:
    • Serve as a connector or hub supporting campus teaching and learning initiatives and communities of pedagogical practice that advance the pedagogical growth and learning of MSU educators.
    • Empower educators to share best teaching practices and seek professional development opportunities that will elevate the quality of teaching in ways that promote learning and reduce graduation and grade gaps.
    • Foster effective, engaging, and equitable teaching and learning that are guided by strategic institutional priorities.
    • Create centralized campus-wide teaching and learning innovation opportunities with consistent messaging and cross-institutional connections and efficiencies.
    • Support teaching and learning in all modalities, with an emphasis on growth in online learning opportunities at MSU.
    • Provide consultations for individual educators and unit coordinators to improve pedagogy and revise curriculum that meets identified needs.
    • Create a space for undergraduate and graduate students to understand the teaching-learning interplay.
    • Support assessment of learning outcomes for individual educators and unit coordinators with evidence-based evaluation tools for all modes of instruction.Specific Responsibilities and Qualifications for the Associate Provost of Teaching and Learning Innovation:
      • Furthering the Universitys commitments to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), student success, and faculty success as constitutive of academic excellence through programming that reflects and reinforces the importance of inclusive practices in all aspects of our work.
      • Advancing the vision, mission, and values of the CTLI and leading the development of shared goals and objectives.
      • Demonstrating creative leadership that will assure the CTLIs goals address emerging issues in higher education.
      • Engaging in productive and strategic interactions with the Provost, the Associate Provost for Faculty and Academic Staff Development, and the Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Faculty and Academic Staff Affairs to ensure that the CTLI is aligned with institutional priorities.
      • Building, nurturing, and maintaining a robust network of relationships with leaders, educators, and units across campus that advance both unit-level and cross-institution initiatives and collaborations that support improved teaching and learning at MSU.
      • Developing and assessing a broad array of evidence-based teaching and learning programs for all educators teaching across the full range of modalities.
      • Centering student success in all initiatives, as well as consistent engagement with students to do so.
      • Obtaining external grant support in areas such as teaching and learning research and educator professional development.
      • Demonstrating effective staff mentoring as those staff fulfill the CTLI's mission (e.g., encouraging their continuous improvement and ongoing professional growth).

        • Candidates must have a terminal degree.
        • Candidates may be in the tenure system, continuing system, or fixed-term system.
        • Candidates must have the rank of full professor or senior specialist, or have a combination of years in position and leadership experiences commensurate with one of those senior ranks. Desired Qualifications

          • Knowledge of MSU (or other major university) in terms of organizational complexities, culture, structure, and processes and a demonstrated ability to be a strong team player who effectively works across unit lines.
          • Ability to convene and foster collaboration among colleagues representing different viewpoints, interests, positions, and locations across a major university.
          • Experience successfully leading, coordinating, and supervising the work of a diverse team.
          • Training or experience in budget planning, administration, and management.
          • Experience with educator development and planning, implementation, and assessment of a range of programs to support teaching and learning in a variety of modalities (e.g., online, in-person, large lecture, small group, community-engaged, service).
          • Knowledge of and participation in educator development at the national level.
