Job no: 751611Work type: Support StaffPay Grade: 10Major Administrative Unit / College: College Of Veterinary MedicineDepartment: Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory 10046059Sub Area: AP- ProfessionalsSalary: 43268.00 - 50000.00 Salary CommensurateLocation: East LansingCategories: Health Care Support, Veterinary/Animal Care, Administrative Professionals- AP, Full Time (90-100%), UnionPosition SummaryThe Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is seeking a Laboratory Technologist in the Clinical Pathology Laboratory section to perform and evaluate complex chemical and microscopic tests to provide timely, accurate diagnostic data for use by veterinarians; perform clinical laboratory procedures in the areas of clinical chemistry, immunohematology, hematology, coagulation, immunology, and urinalysis. Work hours vary including evenings, weekends and holidays. Duties associated with this position involve exposure to veterinary biological specimens, working with hazardous waste, use of regulated chemicals and biological materials, and working on a video display terminal greater than 25 percent of the time.Reporting to and working closely with the Clinical Pathology section supervisor, the Laboratory Technologist will be responsible for:80% - Performs laboratory assays, procedures, data reduction, and paperwork/ data entry. Performs confirmatory, quantitative tests. Performs all work accurately and in a timely manner.16% - Operates, maintains, calibrates, and repairs complex instruments/ equipment to provide accurate and efficient performance of assays. Maintains QA/ QC records, identifies variances, resolves QA/QC issues. Troubleshoots as necessary.2% - Participates in problem-solving, laboratory policy making, and information distribution. Participates in VDL Activities, staff meetings, SOP drafting and process improvement efforts.2% - Consults with veterinarians and other clients in order to provide information and lab results. We encourage and welcome our community to share ideas with us surrounding opportunities to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion.Unit Specific Education/Experience/SkillsKnowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, medical laboratory technician or veterinary technology, biological or clinical sciences or a related science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience a high-volume diagnostics performing clinical laboratory testing; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Desired QualificationsBoard certified as a MT or CLS (ASCP or BOR) or eligible as MT or CLS (ASCP or BOR) within six months of hire. ORVTS credentialing in veterinary clinical pathology by the AVCPT within 4 years of hire.Working knowledge and experience with Advia 2120, Beckman AU 680, Nova blood gas system, and Diagnostica Stago Compact hemostasis analyzer, veterinary hematology, and immunohematology; three years of generalist work experience; demonstrated technical writing skills including writing procedures using NCCLS guidelines;A successful candidate will be a professional who is organized, does not sweat the small stuff, but also sees the details, and is able to remain calm, cool, and collected under pressure. The ideal candidate for this role will be team oriented, collaborative by nature, customer service focused, independent problem solver, and have a positive attitude, while maintaining a professional demeanor; excellent communication written and oral communication and interpersonal skills; ability to function as a team member within and across multiple levels of operations.
