Institute/Center Director-Management Job no: 516219 Work type: Faculty/Academic Staff Major Administrative Unit / College: College Of Human Medicine Department: Ctr For Eth & Humanit In The Life Sci 10022579 Salary: Salary Commensurate with Experience Location: East Lansing Categories: Full Time (90-100%), Tenure System Faculty, Administrative/Business/Professional, Education/Training, Research/Scientific, Non-Union Position Summary The Director of the Michigan State University Center for Ethics and Humanities in the Life Sciences (hereafter, "the Center") is a nationally recognized scholar who provides intellectual and administrative leadership for the Center and who recruits the best new talent. The Director possesses a compelling vision for future growth, experience in acquiring external research funding, administrative experience and a strong record of publication. He/she supports the unit's resources including faculty, research and scholarship, teaching and outreach. The Center Director reports to the Dean of the College of Human Medicine. The Center Director is responsible for: Providing the intellectual direction and infrastructural capability to ensure growth Maintaining and expanding the Center's capacity to attract external funding for unit-level research Setting unit priorities for research collaborations including bench-to-bedside interdisciplinary research partnerships Providing leadership and mentoring for scholarship that furthers the Center's mission Providing incentives for cross-disciplinary collaboration both within and outside the institution Ensuring effective development and delivery across all CHM communities of an integrated social context of clinical decisions undergraduate medical education curriculum Ensuring the Center's leadership position within local, state, national and international arenas Overseeing the expansion of revenue-bearing clinical ethics' consultation and training services for residents, health care providers, institutions, and researchers Leading the Center in addressing current and future bioethics dilemmas Supporting outreach and engagement designed to expand knowledge and increase awareness of bioethics issues affecting patients, families, and the health care system Promoting informed dialogue and democratic deliberation in the development of bioethics public policy Coordinating expertise to inform bioethics-related legislation at the state and federal level Working with college and university development to ensure a strong sustained program capable of attracting significant gifts The Center includes a strong core of intergenerational faculty who produce innovative and influential scholarship across a wide range of significant issues in local and global contexts. Core faculty members aim to understand social, ethical, policy and practice challenges in precision medicine, in advances in neurosciences and their clinical applications, in big data research methods and biobanking, in clinical ethics consultation, in shared decision-making, and in addressing the social determinants of health. To respond to the rapidly expanding bioethics landscape, and also to meet its many teaching responsibilities, the Center highly values collaborative support from within as well as outside of the university. Recent developments in medicine and health in the field of "omics" and genome editing as well as in neuroscience create ever more challenging bioethical considerations and highlight the need for a robust Center for Ethics. The Center provides direct support for clinical ethics consultation and policy for hospitals in Lansing and its training and consultation services reach across the state. It has a key role in development of the College of Human Medicine's Shared Discovery Curriculum, ensuring that students graduate with a deep understanding of the social context in which health care is practiced. In keeping with the mission of the Center, a number of programs have been created to further community understanding and involvement in bioethics. Center faculty work to establish and maintain international partnerships that build connections and collaborations with the broader bioethics community. Required Degree Doctorate Minimum Requirements The successful candidate must have a PhD, MD, MD/PhD or JD with a proven track record of excellence in bioethics and academic impact. Teaching will not be required, although the opportunity will exist for the interested Director.
