The individual will be an action-oriented implementer of Advancement programs designed to generate revenue in a donor-centric, sustainable fashion with donors who have proven capacity at $5 million and above. The Executive Director of Principal Gifts Programs will be a seasoned and exceptional team-oriented fundraising professional and talented manager of people, programs and resources who has demonstrated a successful track record at securing philanthropic gifts at this level. The Executive Director of Principal Gifts Programs at Michigan State University reports to the Vice President of University Advancement/Associate Vice President of University Advancement. The Executive Director will provide creative and visionary leadership and coordination of fundraising endeavors at the multi-million-dollar level and university-wide programs. He/she will develop and manage relationships with top-level donors and prospects while working closely and in a team environment with other fundraising professionals, the AVP and VP of University Advancement, Academic Deans, University Leadership and MSU President. The Executive Director will carry a full portfolio of principal gift prospects and serve as a team member on a number of principal gift prospects. He/she will collaboratively develop and implement engagement strategies for these top-level prospects and ensure that the appropriate volunteers, staff, faculty, and leadership are involved in building the relationships with the University. Required Degree Bachelors Minimum RequirementsA Bachelor's degree in any rigorous academic field and a minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible experience as a proven fundraising leader and manager in a complex, decentralized, comprehensive university environment is required. An advanced degree and professional fundraising certification is preferred Experience managing a principal gift program utilizing metrics, systems, and relationship building skills to maximize strategic cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of $5 million plus donors and transformational gifts A deep understanding of and commitment to an integrated advancement program; and experience in a complex major research university environment. Keen understanding of the natural tension that exists when working with a multitude of colleges, departments, and programs with varying priorities is essential Experience working to sustain strong working relationships with staff, donors, faculty, volunteers and academic leadership is imperative A strong ability to develop sincere, productive relationships and to build trust both with internal colleagues and external constituencies is a must Clear and effective written and oral communication and presentation skills, including individual and large groups.
