Nyaka Job Description - Chief Operating Officer Position Title: Chief Operating Officer Position Location: Flexible Position Salary: Negotiable ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND Working in southwestern Uganda, Nyaka uses a unique, holistic, human rights-based approach to work toward ending systemic poverty for more than 43,000 children and the over 7,300 grandmothers raising them. Founded in 2001 with an initial incoming class of 55 primary school students, Nyaka now delivers impact through three programmatic pillars that include education and related support, community support for grandmother empowerment, and advocacy in support of survivors of gender-based violence. Nyaka supports over 50,000 people throughout two regions in southwestern Uganda. POSITION DESCRIPTION The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will serve as a co-leader and partner to the CEO in setting and executing the organization's strategic vision. The COO will provide executive oversight to organizational functions including Finance and Administration, Human Resources, Operations and Information Technology, Fundraising and Communications, and others. He or she will have deep knowledge of the field, programs, and the organization's operating model and will work collaboratively with the CEO to ensure alignment of strategy, programs, and supportive business functions. The COO will manage all domestic functions through their respective directors (where applicable), including Finance, Development, Human Resources, Operations and Information Technology, and others and will manage Ugandan functions through the Ugandan Country Director. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES Leadership and Management

  • Monitor daily operations to ensure smooth progress; review and adjust company procedures and resources
  • Hire and supervise competent, qualified US staff
    • Lead, coach, develop and retain all staff
    • Work with all staff to assure collaboration and retention
    • Implement, review, and recommend metrics for employee performance evaluations
    • Implement, review, and recommend employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and the organization's day-to-day operations
    • Sign notes, agreements, and other instruments made and entered on behalf of the organization
    • Ensure ongoing quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems
    • Engage with and energize volunteers, Board members, partnering organizations, and funders
    • Effectively communicate with the Board and provide, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and make informed decisions
      • Communicate with and assist Ugandan board Fundraising and Communications
        • Support CEO in fundraising activities, including providing updated financial data; interface with donors, as needed Strategy and Planning
          • Work with CEO, Board, and staff to ensure organizational mission and direction are fulfilled through strategic planning
          • Recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve these goals Program Management and Measurement
            • Continually review systems and processes and implement improvements for maximum efficiency and consistency for programs in both Uganda and the US
            • Train staff in all areas as needed to strengthen the caliber of project management, including ensuring close cooperation and support between US and Ugandan staff, and maintain a high level of collaboration between the teams
            • Serve as the go-to resource for all staff on project-related issues, including the review of bids, estimates, and budgets as well as any procurement strategy, and establish margin and contingency expectations
            • Regularly review project accounting reports to ensure accurate entry by project management staff
            • Ensure comprehension and compliance with the most current regulatory requirements for projects
            • Manage existing and establish new subcontractor relationships QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
              • Successful senior management experience as Chief Operating Officer or relevant role;
              • Proven professional experience in non-profit leadership and management;
              • Solid educational background-undergraduate degree required; MBA or similar advanced degree highly desired in non-profit management, public policy, business administration, organizational development, or related field;
              • Excellent analysis, judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making ability;
              • Demonstrated capability to effectively build the capacity of the Organization and its staff, developing a top-notch workforce and the processes that ensure the Organization runs smoothly;
              • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of constituents, including a Board of Directors;
              • Broad experience with the full range of business functions and systems, including strategic development and planning, budgeting, business analysis, finance, information systems, human resources, and marketing;
              • Strong written and verbal communication skills; excellent multidisciplinary project management skills;
              • Preferred:
                • Experience in managing a "values-driven" organization;
                • Experience with grants and contracting processes;
