Job no: 684199 Work type: Support Staff Pay Grade: 14 Major Administrative Unit / College: University Advancement Department: Advancement Mktg And Comm 10069781 Sub Area: AP- Professionals Salary: Salary Commensurate with Experience Location: East Lansing Categories: Full Time (90-100%), Administrative Professionals- AP, Administrative/Business/Professional, PR/Media/Graphics/Comm/Fund Raising, Union Working/Functional Title Associate Director Alumni Communications Position Summary CLASSIFICATION: COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER II/S Title: Associate Director --- Alumni Communications Basic Function: The Associate Director for Alumni Communications will develop and coordinate editorial content for Spartan Magazine (MSU---s alumni magazine), the alumni office website and other digital platforms including newsletters, podcasts, and virtual events. The Associate Director will lead storytelling about Spartan alumni by working with the team to hold meetings, mine the university and networks for stories, and insights and package them into engage content that can be distributed across print and digital channels. As a supervisor within a larger creative team, the Associate Director will plan, write and coordinate content for three issues of the Spartan magazine and other signature communication projects to reach a network of more than 500,000 Spartans worldwide. In this role the Associate Director will select and edit, write, produce and adapt content for multimedia platforms; coordinate production with writers, photographers, illustrators, videographers and designers as well as work with a communicator network from across campus. Characteristic Duties: Directly reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, and working in close collaboration/partnership with the MSU Alumni Office, the Associate Director will: Write and Edit Content Curates content from sources within University Advancement and across the university which includes 29 colleges and units Writes original content for articles and profiles Edits the Spartan Magazine Commissions articles, videos from freelance writers and producers Proofreads, edits and rewrites articles to meet university and AP style and standards Approves content, appearance and format of features, profiles and news Manage Production Creates and manages print production schedule Manages strategy, plan and execution of alumni focused virtual events Oversees photography, design and video to be used in print and online Produces regular project briefs including editorial budgets outlining themes and, deadlines and angles Attends photo and video shoots Assists all staff to meet deadlines Leads monthly alumni stories and news meetings. Leads alumni editorial advisory board meetings. Leads Spartan Magazine production meetings Corresponds and communicates with alumni to gather and collect information and news. Oversees budget communication products Supervise experienced writers and content producers. Oversee Communication Plans Turns complex topics into compelling stories and align them with Alumni content thematic pillars. Develops and implements an integrated communication strategy for content featuring alumni. Builds editorial calendars and create guidelines/procedures for major alumni communication products. In partnership with the MSU Alumni Office, manages a list of alumni whose personal stories demonstrate exemplary Spartan leadership (serve, advocate, connect, give). Prepares and participates in Advancement content planning meetings. Networks actively within the university. Collaborates with team members to develop metrics and evaluate impact of alumni communication products. Partners with leaders throughout Advancement to identify and develop strategies for effective user of alumni content. Stays up-to-date with the latest industry trends and alumni challenges in order to build more effective content. Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Journalism, Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations, or related field; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public and media relations; composing, editing and publication production; news, broadcasting, and print media; and/or marketing, advertising, and creative services; graphic design; word processing; desktop publishing; web design; presentation; spreadsheet and/or database software; public presentation or radio production; or computer programming/technology; and/or experience in a field related to are of employment; management or supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Desired Qualifications Desired Qualifications: Bachelor---s degree required, ideally with a focus in journalism, communication, marketing, or a related field. At least 5-7 years of experience in marketing communications. Experience with editorial responsibilities preferred. Advanced computer skills and a good sense of multimedia production including print, online and video platforms. Highly creative, exceptional storyteller and an eye for good graphic design. Demonstrated ability to manage multifaceted projects, meeting deadlines with thorough planning and implementation. A team player with strong interpersonal skills. Understanding of and commitment to Michigan State University and its values.
