IPosition SummaryMichigan State University operates FRIB as a user
facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science
(DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear
Physics.As one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities, FRIB provides
researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science
to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on
Earth. FRIB hosts what is designed to be the most powerful
heavy-ion accelerator, enabling scientists to make discoveries
about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics,
fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including
in medicine, homeland security, and industry.The establishment of
FRIB was funded by the DOE-SC, Michigan State University (MSU), and
the State of Michigan, and user facility operation is supported by
the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. Since 2010, MSU's nuclear
physics graduate program is ranked No. 1 in the nation, according
to U.S. News and World Report's rankings of graduate programs.This
position affords an exciting opportunity to become part of the
world-class FRIB Laboratory that enables unique discovery
opportunities in nuclear science.Purpose:Entry-level position
supporting the design of innovative technical devices for the
heavy-ion accelerator development and operation.Major
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Organize, finalize, and format documents in support of the
activities and processes of the Mechanical Engineering Department
and other technical divisions and units, including but not limited
to engineering and other technical documents, business documents,
procurement documents, and engineering and technical notes and
drawings. -
- Maintain the Mechanical Engineering Department's engineering
drawing processes, including assigning drawing numbers and other
identifying information as requested. -
- Ensure that engineering change orders and request processing
functions effectively and efficiently by expediting their
completion. -
- Organize FRIB Mechanical Engineering Design processes meetings,
including notifying attendees and stakeholders of meeting actions
and minutes, and maintain Sharepoint website documentation in
support of these meetings. -
- Support the on-time delivery of all FRIB Project deliverables
and finalize/format the required deliverable documentation. -
- Collect and report on the Mechanical Engineering Department
data related to these processes.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are
reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job
classification. -Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: -
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge of all Microsoft Office
software applications including Project, Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
and Outlook; intermediate to advanced knowledge of Adobe
Acrobat.
- Ability to work with a meticulous approach, eye for detail, and
ability to concentrate/focus on texts for lengthy periods of
time.
- Above average written and oral communication skills,
analytical/problem-solving skills, and time
management/prioritization skills.
- Knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations
and the ability to appropriately use e-mail and the Internet for
business.
- Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and
credibly, both verbally and in writing with all audiences.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites.Unit Specific
Education/Experience/SkillsThe job requires a bachelor's degree in
Systems or Computer Science; or Engineering or Physics, with
coursework in Systems or Computer Science; one to three years of
related and progressively more responsible or expansive work
experience in electronics, mechanical and/or electrical drafting
and fabrication techniques, or computer programming in one or more
languages used by the FRIB; or an equivalent combination of
education and experience.For consideration under this posting, a

export-controlled data and/or technology essential to performance
